چکیده
Sulfuric acid is an important gas influencing atmospheric new particle formation (NPF). Both the binary (H2SO4–H2O) system and the ternary system involving ammonia (H2SO4–H2O–NH3)may be important in the free troposphere. An essential step in the nucleation of aerosol particles from gas-phase precursors is the formation of a dimer, so an understanding of the thermodynamics of dimer formation over a wide range of atmospheric conditions is essential to describe NPF. We have used the CLOUD chamber to conduct nucleation experiments for these systems at temperatures from 208 to 248 K. Neutral monomer and dimer concentrations of sulfuric acid were measured using a chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS). From these measurements, dimer evaporation rates in the binary system were derived for temperatures of 208 and 223 K. We compare these results to literature data from a previous study that was conducted at higher temperatures but is in good agreement with the present study. For the ternary system the formation of Published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences Union. 10702 A. Kürten et al.: Thermodynamics of the formation of sulfuric acid dimers H2SO4 qNH3 is very likely an essential step in the formation of sulfuric acid dimers, which were measured at 210, 223, and 248 K. We estimate the thermodynamic properties (dH and dS) of the H2SO4 qNH3 cluster using a simple heuristic model and the measured data. Furthermore, we report the first measurements of large neutral sulfuric acid clusters containing as many as 10 sulfuric acid molecules for the binary system using chemical ionization–atmospheric pressure interface time-of-flight (CI-APi-TOF) mass spectrometry.

Hydration of the sulfuric acid-methylamine complex and implications for aerosol formation.
The binary H2SO4-H2O nucleation is one of the most important pathways by which aerosols form in the atmosphere, and the presence of ternary species like amines increases aerosol formation rates. In this study, we focus on the hydration of a ternary system of sulfuric acid (H2SO4), methylamine (NH2CH3), and up to six waters to evaluate its implications for aerosol formation. By combining molecul...
متن کاملTernary Homogeneous Nucleation of H2SO4, NH3, and H2O Under Conditions Relevant to the Lower Troposphere
Ternary homogeneous nucleation (THN) of H2SO4, NH3 and H2O has been used to explain new particle formation in various atmospheric regions, yet laboratory measurements of THN have failed to reproduce atmospheric observations. Here, we report first laboratory observations of THN made under conditions relevant to the lower troposphere ([H2SO4] of 106–107 cm−3, [NH3] of 0.08–20 ppbv, and a temperat...
متن کاملQuasi-unary homogeneous nucleation of H2SO4-H2O.
We show that the binary homogeneous nucleation (BHN) of H2SO4-H2O can be treated as quasi-unary nucleation of H2SO4 in equilibrium with H2O vapor. A scheme to calculate the evaporation coefficient of H2SO4 molecules from H2SO4-H2O clusters is presented and a kinetic model to simulate the quasi-unary nucleation of H2SO4-H2O is developed. In the kinetic model, the growth and evaporation of sulfur...
